Buffalo, NY – The Board of Education's top candidate for schools superintendent met Monday with some parents of Buffalo school students at a home on Michigan Avenue.
Dr. James Williams addressed general concerns such as parent involvement and student achievement. Although Williams did not get specific, he told parents his main focus is improving student achievement. William says one way to improve achievement levels is to retrain teachers.
"Teaching is a major issue in improving education," Williams said. "You have to have good teachers in the classroom. You have to have a rigorous curriculum. And you must retrain your workforce.
"I think this school district is in need of re-training. We need to have them focus on the things we think they should be focusing on."
Bryon McIntyre, who has four children currently enrolled in city schools, says he is impressed with Williams but is also concerned about the influence of outside interests on the district.
