Albany, NY – State University of New York Chancellor Robert King has informed his staff that he'll resign in June. He's served as SUNY chancellor since 1999. King's resignation is expected to be announced as early as next week's SUNY Board of Trustees meeting.
King is given credit for elevating SUNY's international profile. He also embarked on a $1 billion campaign to draw private funding to the nation's largest state university system. During his tenure, the Scholastic Aptitude Test scores of incoming freshmen rose while enrollment swelled to record numbers. Research grants also grew significantly in recent years.
Governor Pataki says King served with "distinction and success."
In January, he requested a paid six-month sabbatical, but withdrew it after critical press reports.
Among the possible candidates for interim chancellor is Elizabeth Capaldi, former University at Buffalo provost who is now King's chief of staff and vice chancellor.
