Late Winter Storm Drops Heavy, Wet Snow on Region

By Staff

Buffalo, NY – The western Southern Tier is digging out from as much as two feet of snow. Schools in the Southtowns and along Lake Erie were closed today after the early spring storm hit the region Sunday.

Several thousand utility customers lost electricity when the wet, heavy snow brought down power lines.

Chautauqua and Cattaraugus County were the hardest hit. The town of Sherman got two feet of snow, while Ellicottville received more than 20 inches of fresh snow.

The National Weather Service says around eight inches fell at the airport weather station. Six inches were recorded in Buffalo, itself.

There are no immediate flooding problems in Western New York. However, flood warnings are posted for the Genesee River, south of Rochester, and for streams and creeks in Central New York.
