Buffalo, NY – The nation's first American Muslim television network is now on the air. Bridges TV is headquartered in Buffalo.
Network founder and CEO Muzzammil Hassan is a former executive of M & T Bank. Hassan says the network will feature English language programs highlighting American Muslim lifestyles and culture. He also says there will be current affairs programs that will strike a balance between what Arab-based and US networks air.
"What we're hoping to do is to provide a more objective presentation that represents both viewpoints and let the audience sort it out," Hassan said.
Bridges TV is using studio space at WNED Television. Its offices are based in Orchard Park.
For now, it's available only to subscribers of Comcast cable systems and Globecast Satellite. Hassan says Adelphia has not yet decided whether to add the network to its local line-up.
He says he's hoping that Bridges TV will have wide appeal.
"Our primary target market are the eight million Muslims of North America," Hassan said. "The secondary target market are mainstream Americans who are interested and curious about who Muslims are and want to learn more."
Hassan did not disclose what he's spending though he did say launching a television network costs $8 to $10 million. He says the network was financed by 50 investors and 10,000 subscribers who agreed to pay an advance fee. Hassan says the network will also be supported by advertisements.
