Buffalo, NY – A number of groups are banding together to register college students attending the State University of New York to vote in this fall's presidential election.
Right now, just 30 percent of college-aged students vote. Organizers of this registration drive say they would like to see that number doubled.
United University Professions, the union representing SUNY faculty and staff, is working with the New York Public Interest Research Group and others to sign up young voters. UUP President William Scheuerman says it's a non-partisan effort.
"We see this as a cross-roads election in American history," Scheuerman said. "No matter what side you're on, we want people to go out and vote."
Scheuerman says each of SUNY's 64 campuses are invited to participate. He says the school which registers the most voters will be rewarded with a special celebration.
