Buffalo, NY – As many as 6,000 volunteers in Erie and Niagara Counties worked on almost 300 area projects for the United Way Day of Caring Wednesday. Some volunteers painted, cleaned and provided repairs. Others worked in day care centers or helped out at nursing homes.
"Volunteers cleaned up trash and graffiti and put fresh coats of paint at the Ontario Street boat launch," United Way Spokesman Michael Mroziak said. "Over the past few years, we estimate the savings on labor costs at our non-profit agencies amount to $4 million."
Wednesday's event also marked the official start to the 2004 Community Care fundraising campaign.
