Buffalo, NY – The Roswell Park Cancer Institute has raised $11.6 million to meet a challenge established by M & T Bank. The challenge earned Roswell Park $583,000 from M & T, representing five percent of the total amount raised.
A celebration is planned MOnday night when Roswell Park will accept the M & T gift.
Institute Senior Vice President Dr. Donald Trump said the money will help pay for construction of the Center for Genetics and Pharmacology.
"That will replace some aging laboratory buildings that are devoted to gene and drug discoveries," Trump said.
Trump said the new center will conduct research that will lead to the discovery of new ways of treating cancer. It will also look into the genetic causes of cancer and how it progresses.
The Center for Genetics and Pharmacology is part of a massive construction project now underway at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. Both UB and the Hauptman Woodward Research Institute are constructing new buildings.
Roswell Park still needs to raise another $3 million to reach its $21 million goal for the construction project.
