Buffalo, NY – It's been nearly a year since Erie County Clerk David Swarts launched the Mobile Auto Bureau.
The Mobile Auto Bureau spends one day a week in four outlying towns in the county -- Evans, Concord, Grand Island and Clarence. Swarts says the mobile bureau seems to be setting a new record for transactions each week. Swarts says transactions could reach 15,000 by the end of the year.
Because of that track record, Swarts says there are requests for an expansion of the service. But he says that would require the purchase of an additional van and computer equipment as well as more staff.
Swarts says there's a financial benefit from the Mobile Auto Bureau. He says more than $230,000 has been collected in DMV fees, money which is shared with the county. Before the mobile service began, Swarts said some people traveled to adjacent counties to handle their transactions, resulting in lost revenue for Erie County.
