Music Notes: Fun With Music

Baird Trio
Baird Trio

UB's Baird Trio adds some whimsy in an upcoming performance.By Bill Raffel, WBFO

Buffalo, NY – The Baird Trio shows how humor has a role in classical music. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.

The Baird Trio is made up of three faculty members in the UB Music Department: Violinist Movses Pogossian, Cellist Jonathan Golove, and Pianist Stephen Manes. And while they're accustomed to serious chamber music, Charles Ives will have them performing fragments of "Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-De-Ay" and "How Dry I Am" as part of a Trio.

The Baird Trio is one of six groups from our area performing in Carnegie Hall this spring. And with that many Western New Yorkers around, the Carnegie Deli will have to start serving chicken wings.

But you don't have to travel that far to see Stephen Manes, Jonathan Golve, and Movses Pogossian perform. They'll be in Slee Hall on the North Campus Tuesday (4/6) at 8?p.m. The admission is only five dollars, and it's free for UB students. Then on Wednesday at 8?p.m. in Slee, UB's Kappa Kappa Psi Band Fraternity holds a fundraiser featuring several UB Student Instrumental Ensembles.

And speaking of humor in music... did you catch WBFO's Mark Scott last Wednesday talking about his "deep appreciation of classical music?" (from the guy who likes John Tesh?) Mark, you made a mistake. April Fool's Day was Thursday, not Wednesday!
