Record Snowfall Blamed for Two Fatal Accidents

Buffalo, NY – A record snow fall for a March 16th was recorded at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport weather station. Forecasters say more than 14 inches of snow fell in Tuesday's late winter storm. That broke the previous record of ten inches set on March 16, 1956.

Much of the region received well over a foot of snow. In West Seneca, residents are digging out from 16 inches of snow. Amherst recorded 13 inches. In Cattaragus County, Ellicottville was hit with 16 inches. Chautauqua County received more than 10 inches of snow.

The challenge of clearing snow-clogged city streets prompted administrators of the Buffalo school system to close all city schools Wednesday.

Wintry conditions are being blamed for causing two fatal crashes in the area.

One person was killed Tuesday afternoon in Lancaster when a car slid into the path of an oncoming school bus.

The victim's name hasn't been released yet.

Almost at the same time in Pendleton, another car spun into the path of a pickup truck.

A passenger in the car -- 18-year-old Katlyn Gosch of Pendleton -- was pronounced dead at Lockport Memorial Hospital. Gosch was a student at Starpoint High School.

Two other people riding in the car are hospitalized with head injuries.

Both crashes are under investigation.
