New BPO Season Starts with Three Different ViolinistsBy Bill Raffel, WBFO
Buffalo, NY – Sample three different styles of violin playing as the Buffalo Philharmonic begins its season with the annual Gala. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.
Violinist Nadja Solerno-Sonnenberg will perform this Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Camille Saint-Seans on Saturday (9/20), before Regina Carter plays jazz and Eileen Ivers, Celtic. Then all three will join together for a new piece called Interplay, written especially for them by Chris Brubeck, the son of jazz master Dave Brubeck. All under the baton of Joann Falletta.
Nadja says the Boston Pops came up with the idea for this joint performance.

Another chamber orchestra begins its season tomorrow, the Slee Sinfonietta with Music Director Magnus Martensson. One of his compositions will be featured along with Shoenberg's Transfigured Night and a Viola Concerto by Krzysztof Penderecki with Soloist Bjorn Anrhold-Olsson. That's Tuesday (9/16) at 8?p.m. in Slee Hall on UB's North Campus.
Also this week, a number of high school marching bands from across Western New York and Northern Pennsylvania will perform Saturday (9/20) at 7?p.m. in Foyle-Kling Field. Located next to Lancaster High School at the corner of Pleasant View and Forton Drive. And the best part of this is, you don't have to sit through a football game to see them. Pianist Sergei Podobedov opens the Friends of Vienna's new season Sunday (9/21) at 3:30?p.m. in the Unity Church on Delaware near Gates Circle.
And the Buffalo Recorder Society welcomes all recorder players to join them tonight (Monday, 9/15) at 7:30?p.m. in Room 220 of Bacon Hall on the Buffalo State Campus. The group meets twice a month, and players at any level are welcome. For more information, call 836-8518.
