Buffalo, NY – Two orchestras open their new seasons on the same night. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.
The Buffalo Philharmonic welcomes three violinists for its Gala on Saturday, September 20th. More about that next week.
But today, our focus is the Western New York Chamber Orchestra, whose director Joel Revzen is currently on the road, driving from the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts to Phoenix where he'll be the new director of the Arizona Opera orchestra. I caught up with him while he was passing through Omaha, Nebraska and asked how far other members of the ensemble will be traveling.

Happening this week, Percussionist Anthony Miranda presents a world premiere program of original pieces which he says "push the boundaries of instrumental and rhythmic expression." Members of the UB Percussion Ensemble will assist Friday (9/12) at 8 p.m. in Slee Hall on the North Campus.
Organist Diane Belcher gives a free recital Friday (9/12) at 7:30 p.m. in Saint Joseph's Cathedral on Franklin Street downtown.
And three performances will be in honor of the 9/11 anniversary. Cellist Robert Hausman and Pianist Alfred Frenning feature two works by local composers and more Thursday (9/11) at 10:30 a.m. in the Jewish Community Center on North Forest Road in Getzville. The American Legion Band of the Tonawandas gives a free concert Thursday (9/11) at 7 p.m. in Mount Saint Mary's Academy in the Town of the Tonawanda. And The Holland Community choir presents a free concert entitled God Bless America, Friday (9/12) and Saturday (9/13) at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. in Holland United Methodist Church.
