Music Notes: BPO Celebrates Summer

Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra
Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra

The Buffalo Philharmonic prepares for a busy summer of concerts throughout the region.By Bill Raffel, WBFO

Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo Philharmonic kicks off its summer season with a full week of performances. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.

Paul Ferington will share the podium with Ron Spigelman and new Principal Pops Conductor Marvin Hamlisch this summer. And that podium will travel from Lyndonville to Ellicottville for both free and paid concerts.

Many of these performances will take place in parks designed by famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead. This year marks the 100th anniversary of his death plus the 25th anniversary of Buffalo's Olmstead Parks Conservancy. So Paul Ferington says some of the music will celebrate the outdoors.

The concerts take place:

  • Tuesday, July 1st at 7?p.m. on Goat Island in Niagara Falls (free).
  • Thursday, July 3rd in Dunn Tire Park downtown. A Buffalo Bisons game begins at 6?p.m., before the concert starts at 9?p.m. (ticketed).
  • Friday, July 4th in Lyndonville on Route 63 North of Medina (free).
  • Saturday, July 5th at 7:30?p.m. at Holiday Valley in Ellicottville (ticketed) with Ron Spigelman conducting.

You'll also have a musical July 4th on WBFO with a broadcast of the American Legion Band of the Tonawandas starting at 2?p.m. Then at night, head over to Baird Point on UB's North Campus for 23 Skidoo starting at 7?p.m., followed by the Erie County Wind Ensemble at 8:45?p.m. and fireworks.

The Chautauqua Symphony celebrates July 4th with the 1812 overture and fireworks, Friday at 8:00?p.m. in the Amphitheatre. The C-S-O has a special matinee family concert Thursday (7/3) at 3?p.m., in addition to a Tuesday evening (7/2) performance of Max Bruch's Scottish Fantasy at 8:15?p.m. And the Chautauqua Opera opens its season with LaBoheme sung in English Thursday (7/3) and next Monday (7/7) at 7:30?p.m. in Norton Hall.

I'm Bill Raffel. Have a great week!
