Buffalo, NY – Celebrating the old and the new with two different music festivals this week. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.
For the old, go the Fredonia Opera House where Grant Cooper conducts the International Baroque Soloists in the annual Bach and Beyond Festival. The main concerts are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (6/6-6/8) with chamber performances Tuesday through Friday at restaurants around Fredonia.
And for the new, it's June in Buffalo, the annual celebration of New Music sponsored by the UB Music Department. The festival opens tonight with featured composer Philip Glass. See the complete schedule for a listing of other featured composers and performances, continuing through Saturday.
Hear this Third Symphony by Philip Glass performed tonight (Monday, 6/2) at 8?p.m. in UB's Slee Hall, along with an informal talk by Philip Glass. And the ticket also includes admission to one of two screenings of Naqoyqatsi at 6:00 or 9:30?p.m.
Also this week, Pianist Andre Watts joins Joann Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic for Beethoven's Emperor Concerto Saturday (6/7) at 8?p.m. and Sunday (6/8) at 2:30?p.m. with preconcert talks an hour earlier.
A string quartet from the BPO and Joann Falletta will perform at the Albright Knox in conjunction with the exhibit of works from the Phillips Collection, Friday (6/6) at 7:30?p.m.
The Western New York Chorale sings a collection of "Buffalo and Niagara Falls songs" from the Buffalo and Erie County public library plus a new motet by director Herbert Tinney Sunday (6/8) at 7?p.m. in St. Simon's Episcopal Church.
The Cheektowaga Community Chorus and Millenium Youth Chorus host a Messiah sing-in with scores provided tonight (Monday, 6/2) at 7:30?p.m. in University Presbyterian Church at the corner of Main and Niagara Falls Boulevard. Some scores will be provided.
