Buffalo, NY – Most corporate news these days revolves around slashing jobs and benefits, bad accounting practices and bankruptcy. But one Western New York based supermarket chain is celebrating success with its employees.
Wegmans, based in Rochester, has been ranked the 10th "best employer" in Fortune magazine annual listing. For the sixth year in a row, Wegmans has been included on the "best places" to work list. But this year the supermarket climbed to the 10th spot, Last year, it ranked 68 out of 100 companies.
Wegmans spokeswoman Ann McCarthy says the company is thrilled to placed in the top ten. She says it's been a "tough year" for corporations, both locally and nationally. But she says Wegmans leadership believes a "satisfied and valued" workforce is key to happy customers.
McCarthy, who has been with the company for several years, says workers feel appreciated while still being challenged on the job.
Wegmans employs just over 29,000 workers at stores through out New York State, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The best employer list is expected to appear today on Fortune's web site.
