Buffalo, NY – There's a new day for Buffalo's historic Guaranty Building downtown. Local elected leaders joined the law firm of Hodgson Russ Tuesday to celebrate the firm's purchase of the landmark.
This building was added to the National Historic Registry in 1975. During its century of life, the Guaranty Building has endured fires, destructive remodeling and the threat of demolition.
President of the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier, Clinton Brown, said Buffalo is fortunate such a valuable building is now in good hands.
"This marriage of business and the art of building in a building that had nine lives, represents a terrific commitment so that the firm, the building and the city's best days lie ahead," Brown said.
Brown said the Guaranty Building is studied by architecture students worldwide. It was built in 1895 by Louis Sullivan, who is often called the "Father of the Skyscraper."
Hodgson Russ President Robert Conklin said the decision to purchase such an elegant structure took little debate.
"This is a very important day for us," Conklin said. "It is the celebration of what senator Moynihan called in 1983 a treasure."
