New York City, NY – U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer says it's too easy for teenagers to buy cigarettes online. He's proposing a plan to require web vendors to verify the ages of their customers.
Sunday, Schumer had his 13-year-old daughter, Alison, sit at a computer in his New York City office and go through the motions of ordering a carton of cigarettes from a web site. She didn't complete the purchase.
Schumer's plan would require customers buying cigarettes to type in a driver's license or other state identification numbers, which the vendor would check against existing databases.
