Top Broadway Composer will conduct a BPO Pops ConcertBy Bill Raffel, WBFO
Buffalo, NY – The composer of A Chorus Line returns to lead the Buffalo Philharmonic in a pops concert. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.
Marvin Hamlisch will be on the podium this Friday (11/15) and Saturday (11/16) for a program filled with Broadway favorites.
Jot down the dates of December 13th through 15th for when Marvin Hamlisch leads the BPO's Christmas concert. But first, see him conduct Broadway favorites Friday (11/15) at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday (11/16) at 8:00 p.m. in Kleinhans.
You might remember last April Fool's Day when I told you to Go to Hell. Except I was serious. 17 year old organ virtuoso Felix Hell came to UB's Slee Hall for a fabulous concert. So fabulous that the folks at Slee are giving you Hell again, Friday (11/15) at 8 p.m. It's amazing to see someone so young have such command of the pipe organ. So I recommend you buy a ticket for this concert because after all, UB has Hell to pay.
Also at UB, flutist Lars Graugaard performs New Music on Monday (11/11), and see a pair of very unique instruments on Tuesday night (11/12) performed by Jeremy Brooker and Roland Hutchinson. The Baryton looks somewhat like a cello, though it has some extra strings plucked on the back of the instrument. Both recitals start at eight in the Baird Recital Hall, and they're free.
The Prazak String Quartet features works of Haydn, Martinu, and Borodin tomorrow (Tuesday, 11/12) at 8 p.m. in Kleinhans, sponsored by the Buffalo Chamber Music Society.
Composer Russell Peterson joins the Western New York Chamber Orchestra as soloist in his own Concerto for Alto Saxophone. Music Director Joel Revzen also leads Beethoven's Second Symphony, Saturday (11/16) at 8 p.m. in Fredonia State's King Concert Hall.
Members of the Buffalo Philharmonic string section will be in recital Tuesday (11/12) at 7:30 p.m. in Canisius College's Montante Cultural Center on Main Street. And it's an all-cello recital with Nancy Baun and other cellists Wednesday (11/13) at 12:10 p.m. in the downtown library.
Sunday (11/17) is a busy day for chamber music. The Aulos Duo of Flutist Eileen Yu and Pianist Leah Peer give a free recital at 2pm in the Montante Cultural Center. The Friends of Vienna present Cellist Amelie Fradette and Pianist Pierre-Richard Audette at 3:30 p.m. in the Unity Church on Delaware Avenue.
And the Ars Nova Musicians take the Viva Vivaldi Festival to Blessed Sacrement Church on Delaware near Utica, Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Concerti for strings and clarinets will be featured.
Classical guitarist David Burgess turns to Spanish and Latin American music Wednesday (11/13) at 7 p.m. at Jamestown Community College's Jamestown Campus.
Organist Christina Shrewsbury gives a free half-hour recital Friday (11/15) at 12:30 p.m. in Saint Paul's Cathedral downtown.
