A rarely performed Vivaldi Mass is part of this year's Viva Vivaldi festival.By Bill Raffel, WBFO
Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo Choral Arts Society joins the Ars Nova Musicians for a rarely heard gem by Vivaldi. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.
The Viva Vivaldi Festival kicked off last nigh and continues every Sunday in November at 6:30 p.m. The next installment takes place at Saint Joseph's University Church on Main Street and includes concerti by Handel and Vivaldi for oboe, trumpet, and violin.
For the final work, Mary Louise Nanna selected Vivaldi's Sacrum Mass featuring four soloists and the Choral Arts Society, directed by Marcia Giambrone. Marcia tells me she never heard of the Mass until now.
The Our Lady of Victory Basilica is always filled for the Buffalo Choral Arts Society's Christmas concert, this year on Friday and Sunday December 13th and 15th at 7:30 p.m. So it's not too early to order your tickets by calling 832-4542.
But first, see the choir join the Ars Nova Musicians to perform Vivaldi's Sacrum Mass, this Sunday (11/1) at 6:30 p.m. in Saint Joseph's University Church on Main Street. Mary Louise Nanna will be on the podium. And thanks to Marcia Giambrone for joining us on Music Notes.
Many members of the Buffalo Philharmonic make up the Ars Nova Musicians. And some other BPO musicians will also be presenting chamber music on Sunday. Associate Conductor Ron Spigelman launches a new Intimate Portrait Series featuring works for winds. That's Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Mary Seaton Room of Kleinhans. And on Friday at 7:30 p.m., the orchestra turns to music of Pink Floyd.
The American Legion Band of the Tonawandas presents its annual Veterans Day pops concert Saturday (11/9) at 7 p.m. in Lockport's Palace Theatre and Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda.
BPO Violinist Emeritus Mathew Tworek joins pianist Paul Hartley for a free half-hour recital Friday at 12:30 p.m. in Saint Paul's Cathedral downtown.
At UB this week, BPO clarinetist John Fullam is in recital on Tuesday (11/5), and the Muir String Quartet continues the Slee/Beethoven String Quartet cycle on Friday (11/8). Both performances start at 8 p.m. in Slee Hall on the North Campus. And Pianist Stephen Manes and the Amherst Saxophone Quartet give a free performance of a Mozart Quintet, Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Baird Recital Hall.
