Bioinformatics Center Celebrates Opening

Buffalo, NY – The University at Buffalo is celebrating the opening of the temporary home for its Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics.

The center uses sophisticated computer technologies to analyze vast amounts of data compiled in the Human Genome Project, making possible the development of revolutionary new drugs.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer said the center is a top priority for him. Schumer, Senator Hillary Clinton and the local congressional delegation secured $2 million for the project in the defense spending bill approved last week.

Schumer says as much as $9 million more could be allocated for the center after Congress finishes work on the rest of this year's spending measures.

Schumer calls the world-class facility a testament to Buffalo's leadership in high performance computing, genomics and bioimaging.
