Buffalo, NY – A steam pipe accident killed a maintenance employee at the University at Buffalo's South Campus Wednesday.
The worker apparently was working in the basement of Crosby Hall when the pipe malfunctioned.
Students and staff were evacuated and police shut down the building.
UB facilities official Mike Dupre says a steam line separated from a flange pipe where the line enters the building. He says it's not clear why it happened.
The victim's name wasn't immediately released.
The building is more than 70 years old and houses programs in UB's School of Architecture and Planning. All classes and activities in Crosby Hall are cancelled Thursday and Friday.
Officials say there will be asbestos cleanup, then mechanical repairs. There will also be a review of safety procedures.
