Bill Raffel talks with two leaders of a summer school for brass musicians at the University at BuffaloBy Bill Raffel, WBFO

Buffalo, NY – A prestigious summer for young brass players is taking place at UB during the next two weeks. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.

UB's Band Director Jon Nelson used to be part of the Atlantic Brass Quintet. Every year, since 1993, the ensemble has invited talented young musicians across the country to study brass quintet music with them. Yesterday, they were auditioning students to form these groups. But I managed to catch up with Atlantic Brass Trumpeter Jeffrey Luke and Jon Nelson in between auditions. Jeff credits Jon with bringing the summer school to UB.

These are two of the selections from the new CD by the Atlantic Brass. And you can hear them perform for free this Thursday (8/1) at 8?p.m. in the Baird Recital Hall on UB's North Campus, along with another performance one week later. And thanks to Jon Nelson and Jeff Luke for joining us on Music Notes.

Two summer concert series wrap up this week. Roy Lee from Toronto rings out the Carillon Concerts at Calvary Episcopal Church on Milton Street in Williamsville. The old-time sounds of Fiddlesticks are also on the program, starting Wednesday (8/31) at 7pm.

And the Clarence Summer Symphony welcomes guitarist Jason Vieux for concerti by Rodrigo and Vivaldi. Music Director Arie Lipsky will also conduct movements from Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony, Sunday (8/4) at 7?p.m. in Clarence Town Park.

Pianist Migel del Aguila joins the Chautauqua Symphony on Tuesday (7/30) to perform a concerto he wrote himself. On Wednesday (7/31), the Chautauqua Ballet presents an evening of Pas de Deux. On Thursday (8/1), Music Director Uriel Segal conducts Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony, plus Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto with Peter Frankl as soloist. And on Saturday (8/3), Jack Everly and the Chautauqua Opera Young Artists join the CSO to celebrate the centennial of Richard Rogers' birth. All of these performances take place at 8:15?p.m. in the amphitheatre. And on Friday (8/2) at 7:30?p.m., the Chautauqua Opera presents Mark Adamo's Opera Little Women.

The American Legion Band of the Tonawandas visits Brighton Park in the Town of Tonawanda Tuesday (7/30) at 8?p.m., before going to Clarence Town Park Thursday (8/1) at 7?p.m. I'll be the emcee for both of those performances. Then on Sunday (8/4) at 2?p.m., the band plays along the Lake Ontario shoreline at the Wilson Harborfront.

The Lancaster Town Band performs Tuesday (7/30) at 7:30?p.m. in Como Lake Park.
