Bill Raffel previews the Summer 2002 music season at the Chautauqua InstitutionBy Bill Raffel, WBFO
Buffalo, NY – Preparations are underway at the Chautauqua Institution for a new season starting on Saturday (6/22). Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.
Music will fill the grounds of Chautauqua for the next nine weeks. Folk singer Judy Collins will open the Amphitheatre on Saturday (6/22) at 7:30?p.m., before an authentic concert in the style of John Philip Sousa Sunday (6/23) afternoon at 2:30?p.m. Marcus Neiman will leads the Sousa Band and Singers Club of Cleveland. And remember, admission to the Institution is always free on Sundays.
Another Chautauqua tradition is a chamber music recital on Monday afternoons at four. This is the New Arts Trio, an ensemble that performs every year. And Chautauqua's Vice President for Programming Marty Merkley says the first recital promises to be unique.
Marian McPartland and company will visit Chautauqua late in the season on Tuesday, August?13th, so write that down on your calendar. And actually, there was quite a bit that Marty Merkely and I did not discuss this morning? the Chautauqua Symphony and Chautauqua Opera for example. This was actually the second part of our conversation. You'll hear the first part in a few weeks on Music Notes.
Also this week, theatre organist Andy Kasparian gives two performances on the Riviera Theatre's Mighty Wurlitzer Organ. Wednesday (6/19) at 1:30 and 7:30?p.m. It's located at 67 Webster Street in North Tonawanda.
Artpark presents Franz Lehar's Operetta The Merry Widow, Thursday (6/20) and Sunday (6/23) afternoons at 2?p.m., along with Friday (6/21) and Saturday (6/22) nights at 8?p.m.
And Classical guitarist James Piorkowski is in recital Friday (6/21) at 7?p.m. in the Graycliff Conservancy on Old Lakeshore Road in Derby.
