Music Notes: Violinist Returns Home for BPO Concert

Clarence native Charles Wetherbee will perform with the Buffalo Philharmonic this weekendBy Bill Raffel, WBFO

Buffalo, NY – A native of Clarence returns to perform film music with the Buffalo Philharmonic. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.

Joann Falletta is on the podium for the orchestra's next classics concert featuring a medley from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, Dvorak's Sixth Symphony, and a Chaconne by John Corigliano based upon themes from the movie The Red Violin. The featured soloist will be Charles Wetherbee who is still crediting his first school music teacher in Clarence.

See Charles Wetherbee and the Buffalo Philharmonic Saturday (4/27) at 8?p.m. and Sunday (4/28) at 2:30?p.m. in Kleinhans, with pre-concert talks an hour before. The Philharmonic will also perform alongside the Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra Wednesday (4/24) at 7:30?p.m. in Kleinhans with Johann Falletta and GBYO Music Director Gerard Floriano sharing the podium. Admission is free, but you should call the Philharmonic Box Office to reserve your seats.

The Shanghai Quartet closes the Buffalo Chamber Music Society's Season Tuesday at 8?p.m. in Kleinhans, with a pre-concert talk at 7:15. Quartets of Mozart, Barber, and Schubert will be featured. The Johannes String Quartet performs Friday at 8?p.m. in the Olean High School Auditorium, with a pre-concert talk at 7?p.m.

The Grosvenor Concert Series presents the trio Tremani, featuring BPO Clarinetist John Fullam, BPO Bassoonist Glenn Einschlag, and Pianist Donald Rebic. That's free, Wednesday (4/24) at 12:10?p.m. in the auditorium of the Central Library downtown.

A number of local musicians will perform chamber music Saturday (4/27) and Sunday (4/28) nights at 7?p.m. in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Buffalo, at the corner of Elmwood and West Ferry. Schubert's famous Trout Quintet closes the series on Sunday night.

A number of student ensembles give free concerts in UB's Slee Hall this week, all starting at 8?p.m. Catch the Concert Band on Wednesday, the Choir and Chorus on Thursday, and the Symphony Orchestra on Friday. Or for a matinee, see the Saxophone Ensemble Sunday at 3?p.m.

The Fredonia College Choir comes to Trinity Episcopal Church on Delaware for a free concert, Tuesday (4/23) at 8?p.m. And the Bands of Fredonia State will stay in Fredonia for a free concert, Friday at 8?p.m. in the King Concert Hall.

The Western New York Chorale sings songs of spring Sunday (4/28) at 7:30 in St. Simon's Episcopal Church on Cazenovia St. in Buffalo. Soprano Katherine Johnson is in recital with Pianist William Hicks Sunday (4/28) at 2?p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center of Canisius College.

Vocalists from the Glimmerglass Opera Company present excerpts from their 2002 season Saturday (4/27) at 8?p.m. in the auditorium of the Nichols School, at the corner of Colvin and Amherst.

Finally, Saint Paul's Cathedral hosts two free organ recitals on Friday (4/26), both winners of recent competitions. Timothy Pyper gives a half-hour performance at 12:30, and Erwan LePrado will be featured at 7?p.m.
