Noted Flutist Visits UB

Flutist Ransom Wilson has a busy week at the University at BuffaloBy Bill Raffel, WBFO

Buffalo, NY – A very busy flutist will be spending the week at UB. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.

Ransom Wilson travels across the country giving concerts and conducting. It's rare when he stays in one place for a more extended time. But between an appearance with the Slee Sinfonietta on Tuesday (4/16), a master class on Wednesday (4/17), and recital on Thursday (4/18), he won't be sitting still either.

Wilson is just as comfortable playing Mozart as he is this Fantasy by Joseph Schwanter, because he says flutists must be versatile.

See Ransom Wilson perform with Magnus Martensson and the Slee Sinfioneitta on Tuesday (4/16) and in recital with Pianist Douglas Ashcraft on Thursday (4/18). Both performances start at eight in Slee Hall on UB's North Campus. And all flutists or potential flutists are invited to a free master class Wednesday (4/17) at 4PM in the Baird Recital Hall, next door to Slee. Also in Slee this week, the UB Percussion Ensemble performs Friday (4/19) at 8PM followed by the Flute Ensemble Sunday (4/21) at 3PM.

Across town, Buffalo State College welcomes the River City Brass Band from Pittsburgh, Friday (4/19) at 8PM in Rockwell Hall.

Pops Conductor, Pianist, and Composer Marvin Hamlisch leads the Buffalo Philharmonic Friday (4/19) at 7:30PM and Saturday (4/20) at 8PM. Winners of a local talent competition will be featured. And the orchestra celebrates Earth Day with Andrew Bisantz on the podium for a family concert Sunday at 2:30PM, featuring works of Beethoven, Vivaldi, and Hovannes, all inspired by the outdoors.

The Freudig Singers will also be celebrating spring, Saturday (4/20) at 7:30PM in the Orchard Park Presbyterian Church at 4369 South Buffalo Street and Sunday (4/21) at 7PM in Kenmore Presbyterian Church.

The Western New York Chorale also presents a spring concert Sunday (4/21) at 4PM in University Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Main and Niagara Falls Boulevard.

The Canisius College Chorale also sings Sunday at 7 in Saint Christopher's Church on Niagara Falls Boulevard near Ellicott Creek Park.

Theatre Organist Paul Roberts performs on the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ in the Riviera Theatre, 67 Webster Street in North Tonawanda, Wednesday (4/17) at 7:30PM.

And members of the Buffalo Philharmonic join the Amherst Symphony as soloists Sunday (4/21) at 7PM in the Amherst Middle School on Kings Highway. And arrive at 6:15 for a special introduction to string quartets from the BPO string quartet.
