School Board to Receive $478 Million Budget

Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo Board of Education will receive a proposed budget for 2002-2003 from Superintendent Marion Canedo Wednesday night.

Spending in Canedo's plan totals $478 million. She is projecting a $42.6 million deficit. Canedo is forecasting a revenue shortfall of $14.3 million, while costs are expected to rise by $28.3 million. The district may close as many as six schools in 2002-2003, saving $6 million.

Canedo says the district is in dire straits.

"The state has again failed to pass a budget by April 1st," she said. "We are left with the governor's basic proposed budget."

The Pataki budget would hold the line on education spending in the coming year.
