WBFO presents the Buffalo Philharmonic's "Toast to Toscanini"By Bill Raffel, WBFO
Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo Philharmonic will be broadcast on WBFO, some Easter performances, and a recorder workshop. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with some musical odds and ends on Music Notes.
First of all, thanks to everyone who helped WBFO reach our $200,000 fundraising goal last Friday. You really do help to make the station special, as does our News Director Mark Scott. Can you believe he was disappointed that I didn't make fun of his musical tastes - or lack thereof - during my Music Notes pitch last week? I mean, how many bosses encourage their employees to humiliate them in public? Don't worry, Mark. I won't forget in October. I only wish WBFO's Mark Wozniak were so open-minded.
Well Mark Scott, one way of expanding beyond John Tesh would be to learn a musical instrument. And a great one to start with is the recorder.
The Buffalo Recorder Society is sponsoring a daylong workshop on Saturday, April 13th with Early Music specialist Gwyn Roberts. You'll work on canons, canzones, and fugues up until the time of Bach. It takes place at the First Baptist Church of East Aurora on 591 Portville Road between 9AM and 4PM, and you could choose to come either in the morning or afternoon alone. If you'd like more information, call 836-8518.
From very old music to the very new, the Burchfield-Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College is presenting a sound art festival called "Signals from the Electric Cloud" next week. Performances take place Thursday, Friday, and Saturday April 4th through 6th at 8:00PM and Sunday, April 7th at 2PM - either in the Burchfield-Penney or the main Auditorium in Rockwell Hall on Elmwood Avenue.
These sounds are courtesy of a Japanese composer Tetsu Inoue who will be featured on Saturday and Sunday. Other artists include UB Media Studies Professor Tony Conrad and the Casiophonic Marching Band. The series is being presented in conjunction with Alfred University's Institute of Electronic Arts.
The most recent Buffalo Philharmonic Classics concert will be broadcast on WBFO tomorrow (Tue 3/26)! Joann Falletta leads a tribute to Toscanini, ending with a very energetic performance of Ottorino Respighi's Roman Festivals.
Hear this concert on WBFO tomorrow (Tuesday, 3/26) at 2PM. It is also being transmitted around the world with help from NPR's Symphonycast series.
Finally, Christmas has generated volumes of music over the years, but the same can't be said about Easter and Good Friday. Nevertheless, there are two holiday performances this week. Theatre Organist Graham Mitchell presents a free Easter concert on the Riviera Theatre's Mighty Wurlitzer. It's free Thursday (3/28) at 2PM at 67 Webster Street in North Tonawanda.
And the Cathedral Consort performs Music for the Passion, including Vivaldi's Stabat Mater and Paul Pavour's Threnody for Good Friday. That takes place Friday (3/29) at 8PM in Saint Joseph's Cathedral on Franklin Street in downtown Buffalo.
And that's Music Notes. I'm Bill Raffel. Have a great week!
