JoAnn Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic prepare for a Toscanini tribute, to be recorded for national and worldwide broadcast on NPRBy Bill Raffel, WBFO

Buffalo, NY – NPR bestows a major honor upon the Buffalo Philharmonic. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.

The NPR series Symphonycast wanted to pay tribute to Arturo Toscanini in honor of the 135th anniversary of his birth. So the producers asked JoAnn Falletta to dedicate a concert to the maestro for a national radio broadcast. Those performances will take place in Kleinhans this weekend, and JoAnn plans to keep Toscannini in mind while on the podium.

In as much as we love to bring you the Buffalo Philharmonic on WBFO, you simply can't beat a live performance in Kleinhans Music Hall. See JoAnn Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic Friday (3/15) at 7:30PM and Saturday (3/16) at 8:00PM, with pre-concert talks an hour before. Then hear the concert on WBFO, Tuesday, March 26th at 2PM.

On Sunday (3/17) at 7:30PM, the Philharmonic celebrates Saint Patrick's Day with help from the band Cherish the Ladies. And I'll have the honor of introducing the concert. Then Peter Nero joins the orchestra for a Pops Concert on Friday and Saturday, March 22nd and 23rd.

The Friends of Vienna present a recital with Violinist Mathew Tworek, Clarinetist Andrea Flagler-Runfolo, Cellist Kyung Park, and Pianist Paul Harley. It takes place Sunday (3/17) at 3:30PM in the Unity Church on Delaware Avenue.

Pianist Persis Vehar, Violinist Ansgarius Aylward, and Cellist Bryan Eckenrode perform works of women composers Monday (3/18) at 7:00PM in the Montante Cultural Center.

The Western New York Chamber Orchestra performs Mozart's 39th Symphony and Robert Schuman's A Minor Concerto with Piano Soloist Lee Luvisi. Joel Revzen conducts Sunday (3/17) at 4PM in Fredonia State's King Concert Hall. That same day, Pianist Claudia Hoca is in recital at 7PM in Central Park United Methodist Church on Beard Avenue.

At UB's Slee Hall tonight (Monday, March 11), Pianist Helena Bugallo, Cellist Jonathan Golove and Trumpeter John Nelson are in recital. And on Wednesday (3/13), the UB Symphony performs Beethoven's Fifth under the baton of Magnus Martensson, before John Nelson leads the UB Concert Band. And on Wednesday, March 20th, the Arditti String Quartet performs contemporary music. All of the concerts begin at eight, and this Wednesday's is free.

Saint Paul's Cathedral downtown has a free half-hour recital every Friday at 12:30. This week (3/15), Rev. Earle King performs selections from Dupre's Stations of the Cross on the organ. Violist Donna Lorenzo performs on March 22. And Saint Paul's will host the choir from Saint John's College in Cambridge, England on Sunday, March 24 at 4PM.

Finally, the Amherst Male Glee Club presents the annual Red Blazer Varieties on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday March 21st through the 23rd at 7:30PM in the Amherst High School Auditorium. Ticket information is available at 839-1106.
