UN Embargo on Diamonds
Host Bob Edwards talks to Newsweek Reporter Donatella Lorch about the UN embargo on diamond purchases from the rebels fighting to overthrow Sierra Leone's government. The UN hopes the ban will cut funding to the civil war, which has caused thousands of deaths in the West African country. Lorch says that implementing the embargo will be difficult for a variety of reasons.
US and UN

Bbg & Un
NPR's Ted Clark reports that the United States stood by its opposition to renewing the term of office of UN Secretary General Boutros-Ghali by vetoing a Security Council resolution to renew his appointment for another five years. The veto sets the stage for what promises to be a long and acrimonious argument between the US and the rest of the world, which wants to see Boutros-Ghali get another term.
