Williamsville, NY – A new drunk driving rule will go into effect Sunday, August 15. Leandra's Law calls for stricter fines and penalites.

Local representatives with Mothers Against Drunk Driving unveiled details of the new law Wednesday in Williamsville.

As part of the new law, a mandatory device must be installed in the vehicles of drunk driver offenders.

The device requires drivers to take a breathalyzer in order to start. Local MADD president Beth Obad says even minimal offenders will have the device installed.

"Anyone convicted of a drunk driving offense, if their convicted, including first time offenders is going to be mandated to have the ignition interlock installed in their vehicle," said Obad.

Obad said she knows that this device is going to save lives.

"We must be the voice for those who can no longer speak, and I'm here to remember eight people in my life time that were killed because someone chose to drink and drive. I'm here to hold in my hands every victim, every victim that has been killed because of a drunk driver," said Obad.

Obad said if the behavior of drunk driving is not stop, then the car is going to be the cure.
