D'Youville moving forward on new athletic field

What was once the site for perhaps this area's most famous hot dog stand may soon be the site for the hot dogs of sports on D'Youville College's new athletic field.Bids are going out Friday for an artificial turf, multi-sport field and a locker room building along Fourth Street off Porter Avenue near the campus. Much of the site was formerly occupied by a Ted's Hot Dogs stand.

The college also bought a piece of land owned by the city and four homes along the street. Bids are due back December 19 with a construction award around February 1 and completion by July 15.

Associate Vice President for Operations Ed Cogan says the field and locker rooms will serve many sports.

"You will be able to play women's softball or men's and women's lacrosse and soccer," Cogan says.

Cogan says the space tight so the softball outfield will spread onto the soccer and lacrosse space, somewhat similar to what Canisius College does next to the Koessler Center.

The entire project is expected to cost between $4.5 and $5 million and eliminate much of the need for D'Youville's teams to use parks and other spaces off-campus.
