Roswell Park Cancer Institute is celebrating the official opening of a new clinical building on its downtown Buffalo campus. A procession of cancer survivors and institute staff carried flags into the front lobby as dignitaries marked the beginning of the Scott Bieler Clinical Sciences Center.
The new 11-story, 142,000-square-foot building, located next to the institute's main hospital facility, will provide services including breast imaging and oncology, a chemotherapy and infusion center, gynecological center, adolescent and young adult center, and a survivorship and supportive care center.
The building features copper-colored suns on the wall of the main lobby and other artwork designed to create an inspiring atmosphere inside the center, something leaders say important to those who come to battle their illness.
"This building's here for our patients," said Roswell Park president and CEO Dr. Candace Johnson. "It's here to make their travel in this journey, when they have cancer, a little bit better."
She explained this to guests during the grand opening ceremony.
"Our patients are going to be sitting with their families, looking over this beautiful City of Buffalo," Dr. Johnson said. "Chemo infusion is not a pleasant place to be, but at least we can make our surroundings better."
The center is named for West-Herr Automotive Group head and longtime Roswell Park benefactor Scott Bieler, who recently made a large but not publicly disclosed donation to the institute.
