Buffalo, NY – Governor David Paterson has called on the Legislature to return for a special session November 29 to wrap up unfinished business.
WBFO'S Eileen Buckley spoke to one state lawmaker who represents the Southern Tier about finalizing work with Governor Paterson before Governor-Elect Andrew Cuomo begins office. Republican Senator Catharine Young represents the 57th District in New York State. She tells WBFO News it's not clear if senate democrats will have enough members return for needed votes.
"It's still unclear exactly what will be on the agenda. I know the governor has some items that he would like to handle. For example, the bailout of the New York City Off-Track Betting Corporation, some allocations of some federal dollars. So we will see what happens," said Young.
For now, Young is looking forward to a new beginning with a new governor and leadership. But notes the uncertainty with the proposed layoffs Governor Paterson has suggested.
"We've got to deal with the budget and fiscal crisis. We've got to cut taxes and spending and turn our economy around...It is very unclear as to what is happening," said Young.
Late last month Gov Paterson proposed laying off nearly 900-state employees by the end of this year.
Unions are outraged and pledge to go to court if the layoffs are approved.
