Buffalo, NY – A city attorney who handled police department issues was fired.
Assistant Corporation Counsel Diane O'Gorman was dismissed from her job with the City. O'Gorman was assigned to handle legal matters at Buffalo Police Headquarters.
This week O'Gorman dealt with an issue regarding copy machines leased from Toshiba. A CBS News investigation revealed that the copy machines still had sensitive police information left on the hard drives of the machines after the lease ended.
Mayor Brown insists the firing of O'Gorman had nothing to do with the copy machines. But on Monday O'Gorman wrote a letter to CBS News asking that the two hard drives containing the confidential information be returned. Brown claims he wasn't aware of her correspondence to CBS.
O'Gorman's letter to CBS stated the police department was "unaware" that confidential information was being retained on copy hard drives. The Mayor says he doesn't know who would be responsible for erasing the police department hard drives on its copiers. But Brown says the process at City Hall is different with the IT department handling that matter.
Brown says the City police department has its own internal IT department. He says that is something that will be addressed in the near future.
