Buffalo, NY – There was a slight drop in unemployment in the Buffalo Niagara region in August.
The state Labor Department reports the jobless rate fell two-tenths of a point to 8.4 percent last month. The region lost 12,400 private sector jobs since August 2008.
Statewide, the jobless rate hit a 26 year high of 9 percent in August. More than 874,000 New Yorkers are out of work.
The unemployment numbers were released on the same day that 20 more jobs were cut at Fisher-Price in East Aurora. The staff reduction is part of the elimination of 80 jobs nationally by parent company Mattel.
