The new archbishop of Atlanta, Georgia is a Buffalo native.
The Vatican has appointed Gregory Hartmayer, 68, who has been serving as the bishop of Savannah, GA since 2011.
Hartmayer is a Conventual Franciscan who was born in Buffalo and ordained a priest in Albany in 1979. He attended school in Tonawanda in the 1960s, at St. Amelia's and Cardinal O'Hara High School, and he was Director of Cardinal O'Hara in 1988 and 1989.
Hartmayer has also served as a teacher, guidance counselor and administrator in Baltimore and Florida.
Hartmayer succeeds Archbishop Wilton Gregory, who was transferred to the scandal-ridden Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. last April. He will be welcomed to the Diocese of Atlanta with solemn vespers May 5.
