Theater Talk: Hollywood, Vegas, Broadway, and Buffalo Stars align

If you missed Anthony's cameo in the movie THE AMERICAN SIDE (starring Matthew Broderick and showcasing the City of Buffalo in all of the location shots) then pencil in a trip to 710 Main where Hollywood stars Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw (of LOVE STORY) will appear in Buffalo-born A.R. Gurney's LOVE LETTERS.  Need a little Vegas in your life? Buffalo's own Eric Jordan Young IS Sammy Davis Junior in CELEBRATING SAMMY: BROADWAY TO VEGAS with the BPO at Kleinhans, Saturday night at 8 p.m.

And we have three openings. Two local stage productions and one touring company come with high anticipation. FARRAGUT NORTH opens tonight at 7:30 at Road Less Traveled Thater, 500 Pearl Street. Named after a metro stop in Washington D.C. it's about political power struggles and the failed presidential run of Howard Dean. (Dean pioneered internet-based fund raising and grassroots organizing as opposed to appealing to a few well-heeled donors, certainly topics of interest today!)

WAIT UNTIL DARK, a thriller, also opens tonight at 7:30, directed by Brian Cavanaugh at the Kavinoky Theatre, 320 Porter Avenue (on the D'Youville College Campus). Fredrick Knott's suspense thriller is the story of Susy Hendrix, a recently blinded housewife who unwittingly possesses a child's doll filled with heroin. Harry Roat, a brutal and sophisticated criminal, tricks two small time crooks into helping him con her into giving up the doll. Susy plays a game of "cat & mouse"with the con men until she realizes that she is the victim of a bizarre charade. Susy then knows that the only way to survive is in the dark.

DIRTY DANCING, like WAIT UNTIL DARK, is well known as a movie, and now you can see the touring production of the musical at Shea's Performing Arts Center, 646 Main Street. It opens Tuesday May 3 and runs through Sunday evening, May 7.

Looking down the road a bit, JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG is a drama at The New Phoenix Theatre, 95 Johnson Park. That opens Thursday, May 5 at 8:00 p.m.

THE TRUE STORY OF THE THREE LITTLE PIGS opens on Saturday, May 7 at 2 p.m. at the Allendale Theatre, 203 Allen Street.
