Amherst, NY – Amherst police are still trying to determine what caused a driver to lose control and crash though the bay door of a local fire house.

The overnight accident happened around 12:30 a.m. at the Main-Transit Fire Station between Transit and Youngs on Main Street.

The unidentified driver was the only one in the car, that was so badly damaged that firefighters needed hydraulic tools to remove that person from the vehicle.

Amherst Police Lieutenant Chris Meyers said he was not only concerned for the driver's well-being, but also that of the firefighters assisting the driver.

"The area where the car is, we're not real confident that the structure is sound there, so we had to take extra to make sure the firemen and occupant of the vehicle were as safe as possible during the extrication," said Meyers.

In addition to the building, police said three fire trucks were damaged as well.

The condition of the driver, who was taken to ECMC, is not known. There was only one person inside the fire hall at the time of the accident. He was not injured.
