Buffalo Completes First Phase of Bike Rack Installations

By Avery Schneider

Buffalo, NY – Mayor Byron Brown unveiled one of the city's 35 new bike racks on Jefferson Avenue Thursday. He says it marks the completion of the first phase of a plan to install bicycle racks throughout the city's commercial districts.

Brown says 80 percent of phase one's $25,000 cost will be recouped with grants from a federal clean air program.

The Mayor says all 35 bike racks were installed at the request of area business associations.

"By placing new bike racks throughout our commercial districts, as well as other designated areas, we are working to make Buffalo a greener and more environmentally sound city," he said. "We provided business district organizations with a chance to request new bike racks for locations they designated in their respective sections of city and we received an overwhelming response."

The 35 locations included in Phase One of this program are: 688 and 1069 Abbott Road; 55 and 199 Allen Street; 466 and 504 Amherst; 1955 and 2059 Clinton; 1430 Delaware Avenue; 1187 East Delavan; 257 East Ferry Street; 100, 744, 801 and 1008 Elmwood Avenue; 153 Franklin Street; 254 Grant Street; 1209-1211, 1212 and 1473 Hertel Avenue; 859, 1384 and 1453 Jefferson Avenue; 93 Leddy Street; 910 and 1225 Main Street; 1250 Niagara Street; 280 Porter Avenue; 530 Rhode Island Street; 2234 Seneca Street; 820 Tonawanda Street; 370 Virginia Street; 262 West Ferry Street; and front and back of City Hall.

Brown says the plan's second phase calls for the installation of up to 300 more bike racks starting next Spring.
