Buffalo, NY – The University at Buffalo is creating a department of Biomedical Engineering. The announcement was made Wednesday morning at UB's Center of Excellence for Bioinformatics downtown.
The John R. Oishei Foundation is providing a $3 million grant for the new department. University officials say the new research field of bioengineering uses engineering techniques to develop new medical devices and therapies.
UB will use the Oishei grant, along with another $1 million it hopes to raise, to hire eight full-time faculty members for the new department. Another 20 current faculty members from other departments will also participate.
