Buffalo, NY – UB President John Simpson says the University has doubled security patrols at night on the South Campus. Simpson's comments were in response to questions about the two recent sexual attacks on the city campus.
Simpson says campus security has always been a major concern. He says UB is redoubling its efforts to educate students, faculty and staff at both campuses about safety issues.
Both attacks occurred on the South Campus, but police do not believe they were related. Last Thursday a woman, who is not a UB student, was sexually assaulted by two men. Prior to that attack, a UB freshman was raped.
UB is in the midst of a $5.3 million project to add security cameras, new lighting and an improved emergency phone system at the South Campus.
Simpson says he believes UB's police force does a superb job. He says he would certainly like to see a bigger police force, but faced with a state budget crisis, it's not realistic.
Simpson says Buffalo Police have been responsive and helpful on the South Campus. He says both police departments are working together to deal with jurisdictional issues and how do a better job on and off campus.
