Buffalo, NY – It could get more expensive to drive the Thruway. The state Thruway Authority is considering raising tolls to offset slower-than-expected traffic growth due to high fuel costs.
Most passenger and commercial drivers could see toll increases of under five percent phased in over several years. In addition, discounts for EZ Pass users could disappear.
In Buffalo Tuesday morning, State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said he would oppose such an increase.
"I've spoken to members of the Assembly. They're opposed to it," Silver said. "This is another tax on people who use their cars to and from work. I don't believe it is necessary."
Tolls on the State Thruway were last increased in 2005.
