Union Leaders Discuss Delphi's Troubles

By Mark Wozniak

Lockport, NY – More pay and benefit cuts could be facing many of the 2,200 plus workers at the Delphi Thermal Systems plant in Lockport.

Officials of the United Auto Workers international union met with Local 686 officials to update them on contract negotiations. The current contract is in effect until September.

The talks were held behind closed doors, although one employee said the discussion became heated.

"We heard some yelling and screaming in there," the employee said. "Nothing has been solved yet."

Union members were given orders to avoid the media.

Delphi, currently operating under bankruptcy protection, wants to cut some $27 an hour veteran employee salaries to a newcomer's level of $14 per hour.
