Phase III of Graycliff Restoration Underway

By Mike Greco

Derby, NY – The restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright's Graycliff estate continues as Phase Three of the project began Monday during a ceremony on grounds of the estate in Derby.

The restoration project is being overseen by the Graycliff Conservancy, a non-profit organization made up of mostly volunteers. Funding for the restoration efforts came from various sources, including a federal grant of $400,000.

Graycliff Vice President Patrick Mahoney says repairs will be made to the roof, doors, windows and balconies.

Graycliff was built in 1929 as the summer home for Isabelle Martin, the wife of Darwin Martin, one of the wealthiest businessmen in Buffalo at the time. The estate fell into disrepair over the years until the Graycliff Conservancy was formed in 1997 with the intention of saving it.
