Deadly car crash claims life of 85-year-old Amherst man

An 85-year-old great grandfather from Amherst was killed in a car crash Tuesday night.

Police say 39-year-old Vito Asaro of North Tonawanda slammed into the car of John Wahl who was backing out of his driveway on North French Road in Amherst around 11 p.m.

Wahl was taken to Millard Fillmore Suburban where he died about two hours after the crash.

Asaro was taken to ECMC with minor injuries.  A neighbor said he heard the crash and witnessed a car fly near his yard and then saw a Jeep slam into a home.

Asaro went to ECMC with minor injuries.

Police say they don’t believe alcohol or speed were to blame. They say the 85-year-old man appeared to pull into the Jeep’s path. No charges have been filed.
