Facebook and MySpace Remove Sex Offenders

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo

Williamsville, NY – State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo appeared at Williamsville South High School Tuesday to announce the latest developments surrounding his office's effort to protect children from Internet predators.

Cuomo says more than 3,500 registered sex offenders have been removed from Facebook and Myspace.

The State Legislature passed the e-STOP law last year that requires sex offenders to register their email addresses and online aliases with the state.

"We created e-STOP to help put an end to sexual predators using the Internet as a tool to prey on the innocent," Cuomo said. "Facebook and MySpace are successfully using e-STOP to help make the Internet safer, and it's time for all social networking sites to do their part to keep others from being senselessly victimized."

Cuomo called on other social networking sites to join Facebook and Myspace in purging sex offenders from their membership rolls.
