By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – The woman who waited 22 years for her son to be released for wrongful imprisonment has died. Mary Capozzi of Buffalo died at Buffalo General Hospital of congestive heart failure.

We learned about Mary Capozzi's great faith in 2007 when her son Anthony Capozzi was released from prison after serving 22 years for crimes he never committed. When DNA linked the bike path killer to Altemio Sanchez, Capozzi was set free. Shortly after the DNA results were announced I spoke with Mrs. Capozzi and her husband Albert.

Click the audio player above to hear portions of Mrs. Capozzi's remarks now or use your podcasting software to download Eileen Buckley's report to your computer or iPod.

Mrs. Capozzi's family issued a statement saying they were at her side in her final moments and that she will always be known best for her devotion to her family and unwavering faith. They expressed their sincerest thanks to the people of Western New York.

"We are truly blessed to be a part of this community," the family said.

Mary Capozzi was 78. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held this Wednesday morning at 10:00 at Holy Angels Church on Porter Avenue.
