Buffalo, NY – A new Math teaching method for local pre-schoolers is improving math skills. Two U.B. researchers released results of a three year project conducted in the Buffalo School District. The program was demonstrated Thursday at the Stanley Makowski Early Childhood Center.
The U.B. researchers responded to a major recommendation from the President's National Math Advisory Panel. It called to create a new way of introducing math to pre-schoolers. The study was conducted in the Buffalo Public School District and in Boston. Professor Douglas Clements is with U.B. Graduate School of Education. Clements is also member of the President's Math Advisory panel.
Clements and U.B.'s associate professor of learning and instruction Julie Sarama decided to begin a large scale research project. They based it on a program called TRIAD -- technology-enhanced, research based instruction, that includes the Building Blocks Math curriculum.
