Buffalo, NY – For the first time in the 17 year history of the Linda Yalem run, her killer is finally behind bars.
Preparations are underway for this Sunday's 18th annual Linda Yalem Safety Run at UB.
Yalem, a University student, was raped and murdered while running along the Amherst bike path in September of 1990. In January, DNA linked 49-year old Altemio Sanchez of Cheektowaga to the unsolved case.
Last month, after admitting to killing Yalem and two other women, Sanchez was sentence to life in prison. Andrea Costantino is director of student life at UB and race director. Costantino described how she felt when learning of Sanchez.
Costantino says police agencies involved in the bike path killer case will serve as honorary race starters this Sunday. More than 700 people have already pre-registered for the event. The Yalem starts and finishes near UB Alumni Arena.
