St. Patrick's Day Parade Patroled by Buffalo Police, Some Officers Call In Sick

By Mark Wozniak

Buffalo, NY – Several thousand people turned out for Buffalo's 66th annual Saint Patrick's Day parade Sunday. Officials say there were about 170 different units in the parade, along Delaware Avenue from Niagara Square to North Street.

There were no security problems, as the long-rumored police department sick-out had no effect on the parade, nor on the NCAA basketball tournament at HSBC Arena.

There were some officers who called in sick over the weekend, most from the city's Northwest district. Seventeen officers have been served papers ordering them to appear in State Supreme Court on Friday.

A deliberate work slowdown by police is in violation of state law, and could cost the officers two days pay for each day missed.
